By request I have added categories for the BBC Micro series, the Mattel Aquarius, the MSX series, and the TRS-80 series.
A quick bit of classic computer trivia for you all: Did you know that the Metal Gear series actually got its start on the MSX computer?
True, it reached a much larger audience on the NES... and many, myself included, were introduced to Metal Gear on the NES, but its first iteration was actually on the MSX.
For a while now I've had the idea that it might be fun to participate in a "game club" which would operate much like a "book club" in that participants would play through a game together and discuss the game at periodic meetings.
I tossed out the idea over at Intelligent Gamer but figured I would cross-post here. If anybody is interested please head over to IG and let us know.
Some people who tried to access rdocs in the past 12 hours or so may have been greeted by a domain name parking page. That was my fault. The page wasn't hacked. The domain name wasn't hijacked. It was just that the credit card I had on file with my domain name registrar was expired so my automatic renewal failed.
Every now and then I like to look at some statistics on the size of this archive to see how it's grown. So I thought I'd share with everyone:
There are now over 6500 docs totaling over 15 GB in the archive available for public download. All these docs come from the combined efforts of over 300 different contributors. Since re-opening in April 2005, rdocs has served over 3 million downloads totaling just over 10 TB (that's 10,000 GB) worth of docs to visitors around the world.
As a point of reference, I looked at statistics back in January 2007. Back then, the size of the archive had just topped 10 GB and we had served 5 TB to visitors.
Thank goodness web space and bandwidth has gotten cheaper since I first opened this site.
Portugal has now been added as a region option for uploads.
A few quick highlights of the most recent additions to the archive:
Brain Age 2 (drewbar) Europa Universalis - Rome Strategy Guide (aiguo) Manhunt 2, Obscure 1 and 2, and a bunch of Sega Genesis docs (Areala) Mass Effect (SimonU) Phantasy Star Universe (Electric Fungus) Silent Hill Origins (Peeteer)
All registered members can now resume uploading docs. Everything is working the same as before with one exception - currently the upload filesize limit is 7MB. I plan on increasing that limit but it's not as simple as it sounds and it may be a little while before I get to it.
Fortunately, only about 15% of contributions are over this limit anyway. For those that are larger than 7MB I suggest using WinRAR or a similar archiving tool to split the PDF into multiple RAR files then upload each separately.
Also, I managed to find a backup of all the files just before the unexpected server change. So, the good news is that none of the docs that were previously uploaded have been lost to the best of my knowledge. I am currently restoring all the previously uploaded material to the server. It is about halfway done and may take another day or so to complete. Once that is done, Frequent Contributors should once again have full access to all pending uploads again.
Army of Two (fast fate) Children of Mana, Mario Kart Wii, Traxxpad, Turok (Electric Fungus) Dungeon Explorer (Dr. Rockzo) Eternal Champions (SnTCrash) Geometry Wars - Galaxies DS (darkuni) Guitar Hero III, Tony Hawks Proving Ground (drewbar) Innocent Until Caught (axeman99) Keepsake (corn) Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario (Mafelix) Warcraft II - Beyond the Dark Portal (Peeteer)
Also, I've been working on re-enabling uploads and Frequent Contributor access to pending uploads. I should be finished by this weekend at the latest, so expect that back soon.
