News::Game cover artwork detective for hire
I was busy doing some site maintenance and posting docs yesterday, when I ran across the manual for a little shoot-em-up game called Lethal Xcess (Wings of Death II) from the Amiga/Atari ST era. I had never played nor heard of the game before, yet something struck me as oddly familiar about the cover, shown here:

As I stared at it, I reached for what memory that image could have possibly been triggering. Then it finally struck me. Does the image look familiar to anyone else?

Well, from what I remember, some coders from Thalion Software - who released a game called 'Dragonflight' on the Atari ST and Amiga - formed Eclipse Software. So that's probably where the inspiration came from? Only guessing - have posted the link to this article over @ Atari Forum to see if anyone else has any more info.

Well being a graphic designer and artist. I have to say fail, I don't see it.

other than a dragon thingy flying in the same direction as a dragon is the only similarity, which is a common orientation for movement in art due to our natural affinity to look at something left to right.

The perspective of the dragons don't even closely match, but I am sure I can find a dozen covers and paintings that could be construed as similar, with a dragon flying and facing right. And if there was a case of plagiarism, er... inspiration, usually there needs to be more than a 20% difference.

Really, mageguru? You don't see it? To me it looks like a cut-and-paste Photoshop job that was just barely rotated and then re-colored.

Maybe it's more obvious with higher-res images. Check these out:

Lethal Xcess Hi-Res

Dragonflight Hi-Res

The hind legs, neck, and head look exactly the same - from the ridges on the neck, to the size of the eye, to the angles of the feet. Even the lighting is the same. Look at the shadows on the dragon's belly and the base of its neck.

That's way too many similarities for me to believe it's a coincidence.

I thought you was going to say X-Com Interceptor - 'cos that's what I thought of looking at the box cover! Mind you, that big 'X' at the front might have had an impact!

retro is cool again (only in gaming, mind you!)
